Does a Ham Radio G5RV Jr. Antenna have to in a certain position to work?

I have a 51Ft long, G5RV Jr antenna in an inverted V the apex is @ 35 Ft. and the ends are about 12 Ft above the ground and it isn’t doing well. I have limited space and I can only raise one end of the antenna up parallel to the apex and would have to leave the other end at a 45 degree slope. Would this improve the performance or should I leave it in the inverted V

The full length G5RV was designed as a 1/2 wave for 20M with performance on 10 and 40 acceptable due to harmonics. Many people will tell you that the G5RV must be set up as a flat top, but others say it can work fine as a sloper or inverted V, since it is the center 2/3rds where most of the radiation comes from. Still, as with any dipole, height above ground for the frequency of use is important, with anything less than optimum reducing effectiveness, Since yours is a Jr, its shorter length is already a compromise.

Also, the maximum radiation pattern of a dipole at its optimum frequency is broadside to its length in a flat top configuration. For the G5RV, on 20M it produces two large lobes off each side, with near nulls off the ends. If the station you are trying to contact is off one of the ends, performance will be severely degraded. The lobe patterns will vary depending on the band you are using but realigning the antenna to be broadside to your area of preference may improve performance. The pattern will change when in a sloper configuration, and the performance and pattern of an inverted V varies greatly with apex angle and height of the ends off the ground.

If you can’t get both legs horizontal, I would recommend you keep it in an inverted V, just try to get the apex angle and end height as close to optimum as possible. Variations outside the optimum range can cause significant changes in signal lobe patters and even cause some directivity. This website will do the calculations for you;
