Is it the alternator, the starter, or something else?
Here’s the thing, a few months ago, the battery had problems bc the cables were corroded. As soon as hubby cleaned them, the car started (no jump or anything). A few days from today, the battery completely died, so yesterday, I got it jumped and got a new one (everstart). Today, I tried starting it and it wouldn’t start. There wasn’t any clicking noise. The only thing that turned on were the lights on the dashboard. I’m waiting for hubby to come home with his multimeter so we can test the battery cables. Could it be possible that the alternator went bad? This car is a 2001 model. Thanks!
Yes, it’s possible. Have him check the voltage at the battery before you start it, when you start it, and after. If it drops significantly during start up, then the starter is going south. If it’s the same after you start it as before, around 12vdc, then the alternator isn’t putting out (more than likely). Most modern alternators put out between 13vdc and 15vdc. If he’s got an amp meter, have him check the amperage after start. It should be 80 or more. Good luck!
