How can I test to see if my cable Internet is not working?

My cable internet goes down sporadically. I know it’s down when the flashing lights on the cable modem don’t connect. I was wondering if theres a way that I can know for certain that I’m not getting the proper internet signal through my cable to my modem so I can keep a log when it goes out.

You can call the cable company and they can run remote diagnostics.

Keep in mind the possibility for “dirty plant” inside your house. Dirty plant is industry lingo for wiring faults. In this case, you might have problems with the lines inside your house. Perhaps you have made some “do it yourself” connections or extended the lines within your house. Such connections can be very lossy and result in a degraded cable signal to your modem.

If its too much work to repair those inside wiring faults, your best bet is to connect the modem as close to the incoming line as possible. ie. avoid the signal to the modem having to go through whatever network of inside lines and connections you have inside your house.

I was recently having a similar problem in my house, where we had installed internal extensions to the primary line at least 15 years ago. By moving the modem close to the main line coming into the house and connecting the wireless router right there after the cable modem, I have eliminated the poor connection issues I had been suffering previously.
