Has anyone dealt with a damp wall problem near to where a shower has been ?

What did you do? We have black mould on the wallpaper. Eventually we are stripping all of the paper off to tile but wondered if there is anything specific that needed doing to treat the dampness?

I’m dealing with this same problem. I decided to do a bathroom make-over since my wife wanted to do something different with the room.

I found that the builder didn’t use green board or concrete board behind the tile in the shower. A leak formed at a tile crack. Since it was used every day the drywall never got to dry out. I was trying to clean and reseal the grout when the tile began to release from the wall. Soon it became clear that I had a problem.

The plan is to remove all of the tile (no problem….cheap tile anyway). Remove the damaged drywall. Check to see if any of the wall studs have developed rot and replace as needed. At this time I’m going to replace the tub too. Put up concrete board and re-tile the walls.

The mold was caused by a cracked tile. In your case it could be excess moisture due to the shower. If that is the case you need to remove the moisture with an exhaust fan to the outdoors.
