We have an inside oil tank – how can we put a warning device – or gauge – on an outside filler tank?

We need some kind of gauge to let us know when the tank needs to be filled.

Not familiar with the exact application you are talking about, but there are several options for level control. The easiest would be the old standby float switch, which is very similar to what is in your toilet to control the water level. Then you start getting into the more advanced options. This can be done in a multitude of ways, such as a ultrasonic sensor which reads the level from the top of the tank by bouncing a ultrasonic wavelength of the top of whatever you want to sense and then alarming once it is below a certain level. There are also several types of transducers that would read the level by weight left in the tank, these would also alarm once below a certain weight. Most of these would need to be professionally installed and would probably be costly in comparison to just looking in the tank or possibly getting a sight glass so you could actually see the level. Not sure if this is exactly what you were looking for, but these are a few of the options. Hope this helps.
