does dual channel RAM make much of a difference to you computer?

my laptop has 3 GB of RAM (1+2), but i heard that if it has two modules of the same size, then it becomes dual channel, but vista x 32 can only have a maximum of 3.2 GB – will the difference be significant?????

You’re not the first person to ask this. It does make a difference — dual channels mean that two things can hit memory at exactly the same time. If you have a laptop with “unified graphics”, this is probably the most significant issue… graphics chips are hitting main memory all the time. But it’s also an issue when you’re doing lots of disc I/O.. disc data needs to go to RAM, and with dual channels, the chance of either the HDD or the CPU have to wait for the other to finish is lowered.. but not eliminated. Larger caches on the CPU also help to keep the CPU off main memory as much as possible.

(they also test dual HDDs here, but the two are not interdependent). Now, they did test an Intel system here, but basically concluded it makes very little difference. The reason for this is simple: every benchmark they ran was CPU and memory intensive, but not much on other resources. The CPU itself can only hit one channel at an given moment, so unless your GPU or I/O hardware use the other, there’s no difference.

With an AMD system, individual CPU cores can hit different memory channels, so you would it helps quite a bit more on a modern AMD machine. This is because the memory controller is on-chip, not hanging off an external CPU bus as it is on the Intel systems.

The limit on memory in 32-bit OSs (any one of them) on a PC isn’t precisely 3.2GB, either.. it’s basically defined as 4GB minus (whatever I need for all that other stuff). So on a desktop, if you have 512MB of graphics memory, you have to leave a hole for it in the system memory map. On a laptop or desktop with UMA, you don’t.. so you can actually use that space for real memory. Same goes with memory space needed for I/O devices… it’s very much an effect of your system layout.
