bettas, filters, and poop…?

i have a small betta in a 2.5 gallon tank. i used to have another betta before, but no filter, so when i would feed him, or when he pooped, i would use a turkey baster and suck it out, then add more clean water. i recently put in one of those submersible filters (http://www.petco.com/product/12147/Penn-Plax-Small-World-Pump-and-Filter-Kit.aspx )… do i still need to suck out the poop?

Yes, you still do need to clean the bottom of your tank because the filter will not get rid of everything. You only really need to clean out about 25% of the water along with whatever is on the bottom about once a week(assuming your tank is established).
Good idea with the turkey baster, I have a 2 gallon tank and I use a turkey baster and it works great.
