what happens when an electric discharge passes through tiny gap of air in a gas burner?

Not much. The discharge must pass through a gap of air-gas mixture to light the burner. From personal experience, it seems that for many pilotless spark-ignited stovetop burners, the reliability of performance of the system is poor. Apparently the spark must be in a “sweet spot” that has an acceptable (i.e., ignitable) mixture ratio, and that spot is small compared to the variation of location of the spark discharge. So you may have to wait for several sparks, or even blow gently in the area to increase mixing, to get the burner lit.
If there’s an explosion it’s normally very small, and better described as flame propagation from ignition point to burner.

Gas Hot Water Heater – Common Critical Components

Perhaps the most common and easy to heat water is by using a heater hot gas, and this could be due to the fact that gas is able to get the tank to the operating temperature approximately two times faster its electric counterpart, and the cost is also about half of the cost of electricity.

However, one must ensure that the tank installed in a safe place and be subject to a strong structure like a wall in regions prone to earthquakes because it minimizes the possibility of passing gas fire extinguishing the gas connection in which case the tank goes down.

Temperature pressure relief valves

The most important component of water for hot gas heater is a temperature Pressure Relief (TPR) valve. This device helps to release pressure when the tank reaches the level that is unsafe.
