Does a GPS receiver report the position of the receiver chip, or the position of the antenna?

If a GPS receiver is connected to a remote antenna, is the position reported to be the location of the receiver or the location of the remote antenna?

The GPS unit calculates position based on information encoded in radio signals received from orbiting satellites. Since the radio signals are received by the antenna, the antenna position is what would be reported by the GPS unit.

The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a U.S. military intended primarily for global navigation. The system provides positioning information high precision navigation. The GPS system consists of a constellation of 24 satellites in orbit. Each satellite has a bulletin board atomic clock, which is ideal to provide a time reference of high precision.

This article explains how the GPS clock can be used to provide a timing reference accurate for computers and computer networks. The GPS system is often used for team-time applications such as NTP time servers and timing references accurate.

GPS Time

GPS time is continuously transmitted by the GPS system. The time refers to UTC (Coordinated Universal Time), which is the same worldwide and does not vary with time zones. GPS timing information can be received with relatively inexpensive equipment, such as a GPS receiver and antenna.

The GPS signal is very weak radio signal from low power. The signal has two designated frequencies, L1 and L2. The frequency, L1, is the frequency of GPS civil 1575.42 MHz transmitted signal travels in a straight line can pass through clouds, glass and plastics, but is blocked by objects such as metal and brick. The place ideal for a GPS antenna is therefore on the roof with a good view of the sky. Often the installation of the antenna on the side of a building or in a window can provide a vision of the sky enough to give adequate results.

GPS Clock

The GPS system provides a free-to-air synchronization of time service, there is no current start-up or subscription. Many computer systems use the GPS clock as the reference moment. Highly accurate systems server NTP uses the GPS clock as an external reference to synchronize network time protocol servers. Typically, a GPS receiver can provide timing information with a precision of a few nanoseconds of UTC. The accuracy achieved with a GPS receiver is generally more than enough for most network timing applications computer.

GPS receiver output

The GPS receiver constantly product positioning and timing information. In general, transmitting information to and from the receiver via a serial interface RS232. Protocols GPS interface standard exist, the most common NMEA. The protocol NMEA is a series of phrases or strings, transmitted at 4800 bits per second. Contained within each string is accurate time and position information. Due to the latencies involved in serial communication, NMEA sentences are generally not accurate enough to provide a time reference. Hence, one pulse per second (PPS) output is used. An output of PPS is an accurate output pulse every second that aligns with the beginning of each second. The PPS output can be introduced in a control line on the RS232 interface to provide a hardware interrupt input for precise timing. Often the RS232 DCD line is used as input PPS GPS receiver. The PPS output NMEA time combined with information and provides a high-precision positioning reference date for computers.

GPS Antennas

The GPS antenna is a signal amplifier that increases the GPS signal for transmission over a cable, typically coaxial, to the receiver. GPS antennas used for synchronization are usually dome-shaped pole mounting devices for permanent installation in a static place. Normally, the antenna GPS is quite small in size, measuring less than 900 mm in diameter

GPS wiring

The cable distance can be used by an antenna and a GPS receiver depends on the amplification of the GPS antenna and the quality of the coaxial cable used by the facility. A typical GPS antenna may have a gain of 35 dB. Of low quality, such as RG58 coaxial cable has an attenuation of 0.64 dB / m in 1575 MHz, therefore, a cable run of 55m can be obtained using the RG58 cable. Cable higher quality coax such as LMR400, without the aid of a cable run of 200 meters can be achieved. However, very high quality coax can be expensive. A good compromise is the LMR200 cable, which can be run without the aid of 80 million. Longer distances can be achieved with the help of GPS amplifiers that amplify the GPS signal even more, to increase the cable distance.
