Many people in the U.K are investing in wind energy technologies in addition or as an alternative to solar power. This is a positive step as wind energy is a key part of the UK’s future energy growth and the governments plan to reduce carbon emissions.  40% of all the wind energy in Europe blows over the UK, making it an ideal country for small domestic turbines.

Where you live can be a big decider on whether you can implement an efficient renewable energy system such as wind power.

How do wind turbines work?

Wind turbines use large blades to catch the wind. When the wind blows the blades are forced round, driving a turbine which generates electricity. The stronger the wind, the more electricity produced.

There are two types of domestic-sized wind turbine:

Mast mounted: these are free standing and are erected in a suitably exposed position, often around 2.5kW to 6kW

Roof mounted: these are smaller than mast mounted systems and can be installed on the roof of a home where there is a suitable wind resource. Often these are around 1kW to 2kW in size.

BIG TIP: If your small wind system is connected to the National Grid then you can make money by selling any generated electricity to an electricity supply company.

If the turbine is not connected to the electricity grid then unused electricity can be stored in a battery for use when there is no wind.

Is wind electricity suitable for my home?

There are a few factors to consider if a small scale domestic wind turbine is right for you:

• You need to consider whether there are large obstructions like buildings, trees or hills near your home as small domestic wind turbines work best in exposed locations, without turbulence caused by these types of obstructions.
• You will also need to consider if your home is in an area with enough wind. For the wind turbines to be effective you need an average windspeed of no less than 5m/s.
• If your home is in a remote location away from the National Grid, small wind turbines may be well suited.
• If you need planning permission. Small wind turbine systems generally will need planning permission.

Jib Cranes

Cranes come in two basic types: mobile cranes and fixed cranes. While a mobile crane offers flexibility, allowing it to move to any location or job, fixed cranes can carry much heavier loads, are more stable, and can reach far higher. While these fixed cranes are not meant to be moved very often, some can be disassembled and reassembled, for added mobility.

One popular type of fixed crane is a jib crane. With jib cranes, a moveable hoist is supported by a horizontal beam (called a jib or boom). Jib cranes can move up to five tons at a time, and can span up to 20 feet of floor space, reaching up to extensive heights, depending upon the chosen foundation.

One type of fixed crane is the wall mounted jib crane; with this crane, the horizontal beam is fixed to a wall. These cranes are good for individual hoists within bays, and areas where lifting power is needed along walls or near columns inside a manufacturing facility. They can also supplement larger overhead cranes.

Then, there are free standing jib cranes. These are supported by a built in, tapered base, or sometimes mounted directly into the ground. These are useful for applications outdoors or in other wide open spaces, such as loading docks and large loading bays. Free standing jib cranes are good when a circular coverage area is needed, or when placed in concert with other cranes to provide full coverage of a larger area.

Within the family of jib cranes are the mast type, which are supported at the floor and ceiling, providing maximum stability. These cranes are well suited to applications where a full circle needs to be covered, but cost is a factor (these are less expensive than free standing models). Mast type jib cranes are available in full cantilever and drop cantilever.

Fixed jib cranes are most popular in heavy industrial properties, and sometimes are attached to military vehicles. Occasionally, this type of crane is mounted to the top of a warehouse, allowing materials and stock to be lifted from the ground to any floor in the building.

Selecting a jib crane involves numerous considerations. One must look at what needs the crane will be filling, what the application is for the crane, and if mobility is important. Part of this involves deciding how tall of a crane is needed, and how high the jib needs to extend. It is also necessary to consider what type of foundation or structural support is available to mount the jib upon. Obviously, cost of the jib crane is important, but cost of installation and maintenance must also be considered. For example, when choosing a free standing jib crane, it is important that the base plate include a full gusset plate. This minimizes warping of the base, providing stronger support, less deflection of the base legs, and better lifting power for the crane. With any jib crane, a large, solid head size is important (the vertical plate that attaches the arm to the jib) for stability and longevity.
