What causes a watthour meters disk to rotate slower, a high power factor load or a low power factor load?

Many years ago, “Consumertronics” demonstrated on a television prrogram called “60 Minutes” a device to slow down or even stop watthour meters while loads draw full power. There is no tampering with the meter or using external power sources. This is an inside load method. Does anyone have information or schematics on how this is done? I am more interested in the answer to this question than my original question in the “questions box.”

You have to make your power factor more capacitive, instead of inductive. I don’t think it is “high” or “low”. The power company will have your ass for doing this though. They can tell, because you will be loading their transformers pretty good.

State Grid Corporation of China Released Centralized Bidding outcome of First Group of intelligent Ammeters

In mid-November 2009, the State Grid Corporation of China released the centralized procurement plan for the first group of intelligent ammeters. In the past, bidding ammeters of the tender is independent of utility companies in the province. This is the first tender for ammeters by central State Corporation China Power Grid. The tender is uniformly organized by the State Power Grid Corporation of China and implemented by grid companies in the province.

The auction consists of 2.94 million ammeters, including 2.68 million single-phase ammeters (91%) and 260,000 three-phase ammeters (9%). The bid value of these ammeters total of about RMB 700 million (USD 102.6 million). 12 provinces participating in the bidding centrally. Zhejiang and Shandong provinces are the two leader, with the proportion of bids of 33% and 30% separately.

The result of centralized bidding ammeters of State Grid Corporation of China was released on December 22, 2009. There are 23 companies bidding for success – 16 are single phase ammeter and 11 are the three phase ammeter. In the past, there were about ammeter 2,000 manufacturers in China, leading to low market concentration meter. However, according to the number of successful companies bidding the concentration has improved considerably. Furthermore, only a small number of companies winning the tender, tender small scale.

There are 16 companies bidding phase ammeters successful. Market concentration is higher than the expectation. Jiangsu Linyang Electronics Co., Ltd. continues to occupy first among these companies with the number of successful tender of 380,000, accounting for 14.6%. In recent years, Jiangsu Linyang Electronics Co., Ltd. has a leading position in the industry single-phase ammeter. In addition, Hangzhou PAX Electronic Technology Co., Ltd, and Hangzhou Xili Wasion Group Watt-Hour Meter Manufacture Co., Ltd also occupy more than 10% market share respectively.

There are 11 companies to bid successful three-phase ammeters. The number is lower than that of single-phase ammeters but the concentration is higher. In industry the ammeter, the ammeter sector threshold of three phases is higher than the single-phase ammeter sector, so there are fewer companies ammeter phase. All market shares of four companies in the tender are more than 10%. Yantai Dongfang Weisidun Son Electric Co., Ltd., Hangzhou Pax Electronic Technology Co., Ltd, Ningbo Sanxing Electric Co., Ltd. and Shenzhen Haoningda counters Electronic Manufacturing Co., Ltd. In 2010, the number of ammeters in the tender centrally by the State Grid Corporation of China will increase greatly that the considerable increase in the total tender value. In 2010, investment in ammeters by the State Grid Corporation of China will exceed RMB 10 billion, more of 5 billion yuan to be used for centralized bidding.

The smart grid development in China will also greatly stimulate industry growth in the ammeter.
