does anyone know how to modify a motorola t5420 to the 70 cm band for amateur radio?

i am trying to modify a motorola t5420 to be open to the 70 cm ham radio band. i have a technician class liscence and this is legal for me as long as i will use the end result transceiver for ham radio and nothing else. i was wondering if anyone could give me some ideas on which resistors or jumpers to remove. plz help.

FRS radios cannot be modified for use outside of their allocations. The FCC won’t type accept an FRS radio which can be modified as such. While it would be legal to use on amateur frequencies, it would not be legal for the manufacturer to make one and have it be accepted under Part 15 regulations. Of course with many ham radios you can pop a jumper or a diode to get them to operate on frequencies often covering the FRS band… that’s different

You’re better off finding a used 70cm HT. There are Motorola business band/public safety band HT’s that can be modified and/or reprogrammed for amateur frequencies but they aren’t often frequency agile and would require you to hook it up to a computer via a special interface to program each time you wanted to program different frequencies in the channels. An HTX-404 70cm HT will give you 5W and runs less than $50 on eBay.
