Can I attach a 4 ohm speaker on one side and an 8 ohm speaker to the other side of my stereo tube amp?

I have a Mesa 50/50 stereo tube amp. It has outputs for 4 ohm and 8 ohm on each side.I want to put a 4 ohm speaker into the 4 ohm output of one side, and an 8 ohm speaker into the 8 ohm output of the other side. will this work without causing damage to the 50/50?

There are two separate questions worth considering here: “can you” do this, and “should you” do this.

Depending on the design of your amp, it MAY work without damaging your amp.

However, the likelihood that you’ll get good stereo imaging, or any sort of enjoyable audio experience, from two speakers that aren’t even a matching pair is very low indeed.

Channel matching is EVERYTHING when it comes to getting good stereo. Your tube amp maker probably went to a great deal of trouble hand picking tubes and passive components for each channel so they would work well together as a stereo pair. Why ruin that by using non identical speakers?
