New ID required in order to get on plane?

I have a trip planned for this summer but now a friend told me that according to the Real ID act, I’m going to have to have a background check and get a new driver’s license in order to get on the plane? I’ve looked up the info but am really confused because it keeps saying that some states are complying and some aren’t. So, if my state is not complying but the state I’m flying to is….does that mean I can get stuck unable to board the plane to come home?

The REAL ID Act is aimed at how states issue driver licenses. States are still ironing out how to work the details. The May deadline for the Act is not for everybody to start using a “Real ID” – it’s a deadline for the states to comply with issuing new licenses and renewing expired licenses.

Unless there is a different policy in the future, your current, unexpired license will work for travel. From everything that I’ve read, it is my understanding that states have until 2013 to reissue licenses in compliance with the Real ID Act. You have at least until then to continue using your current license.
