Firefox CPU usage all over the place !?

I’m running Firefox 3 on Vista Home Premium and it is using the CPU crazily for example just opening it to Google it spikes to 19% then back down and up it also does this with other pages such as yahoo answers. I’ve went into the Task Manager and cut off the process and restarted and it has had no effect. If if it helps I have an AMD Phenom X4 9600 Series Processor going at 2.3 GHz. How can I fix this it is driving me nuts it makes my music from iTunes and Pandora Radio stutter !?
