Oscillators have been instrumental in the development of clocks and timing. Oscillators are electronic circuits that produce a repetitive electronic signal. Often, such as quartz crystals are used to stabilize the oscillation frequency.
Oscillators are the core technology behind the electronic clocks. Digital clocks and analog battery powered clock all controlled by an oscillating circuit which typically contains a quartz crystal.
And while the clocks e are often more accurate than a mechanical clock, a quartz oscillator drift still for a second or two every week.
The atomic clocks, of course, are much more accurate. They, however, however, oscillators use more often than cesium or rubidium, but they do in a state of hyper fine often frozen in liquid nitrogen or helium. These clocks compared to non-electronic clocks will drift for a second, even in a million years (and the most modern atomic clock 100 million years).
Chronological precision to use this one-hour network server using NTP (Network Time Protocol) can be used to synchronize computer networks complete. NTP Servers use a time signal from any GPS or radio long wave coming directly from an atomic clock (in the case of GPS, the time is generated in a clock aboard the satellite GPS).
NTP Servers continuously check this source of time and then set the devices on a network to match that time. Amid polls (which receive the action of an hour), a standard oscillator is used by the time server to keep time. Typically, these are the quartz oscillators, but because the time server is in regular communication with the atomic clock for example, every minute or two, then the normal trend of a quartz oscillator is not a problem because a few minutes between the surveys could not lead to measurable drift.
However, there are some occasions when a time server can lose connection to the atomic clock and not receiving the time code for a prolonged period time. Sometimes this may be due to downtime for drivers atomic clock to maintain or nearby interference that is blocking the transmission.
Obviously, the higher the signal drift is greater potential may occur in the network as the crystal oscillator in the NTP server is all that remains time. For most applications this should never be a problem as the longest period of downtime is usually not more than three or four hours and the NTP server would not have sunk much in that time and the emergence of this downtime is very rare (maybe once or twice a year).
However, for some applications of ultra high-end precision rubidium crystal oscillators are beginning to be used, since donâ € ™ t derives as much from quartz. Rubidium (often used in atomic themselves instead of cesium clocks) is much more accurate quartz oscillator provides better accuracy when no signal for a NTP time server that allows the network to maintain more accurate information.
Rubidium itself is an alkali metal, similar in properties to potassium. It is very slightly radioactive although poses no risk to human health (and is often used in medicine images by injection in one patient). It has a half life of 49 million years (the time it takes to decay by half – compared some of the radioactive materials more lethal has an average life of less than one second).
The only real danger is that it represents rubidium reacts more violently with water and can cause fire
