can a amateur radio receive and communicate with police?

dont they use low frequencys or side bands or something? and what proper antennas would be needed on a mobile unit to pick up these frequency’s ? ….i know police scanners pick it up but a ham radio could as well but also communicate ?
ok let me re word this question insted of asking another one. is a ham radio capable of communicating with a CB radio and also listen in on frequencys for exmp do what a scanner does? i guess “best of both worlds” to speak.

Although there is the possibility you can monitor police radio traffic…I seriously doubt you would be able to also communicate in return.

Police radios have special codes encoded with the system that prevent unauthorized communication when attempting to transmit in that frequency.

Additionally, many public service agencies, including law enforcement have upgraded communications through a digital network. This enables more radio “traffic” with fewer dedicated frequencies.

These digital frequencies can be monitored but it requires some pretty expensive equipment to do so.

As one other person has already stated…you can talk with a Radio Shack representative who can better explain what’s available to you for monitoring purposes.

We have all heard many times that it's time to start thinking and saving electricity. We are depleting Earth's resources in record numbers, and it is increasingly clear we must start thinking in terms of protecting and preserving the Earth and its resources when building.
