materials for a van de graff generator?

ok so i’m building a van de graff generator since it seems to be the only “safe” hv there is really. what i need to know is, what should the rollers be made of? what belt should i use? where can i find a good top load? can i make the combs out of frayed wire and how much would i need? i have a motor that has a little shaft off of it and i want to know if it’s ok to wind teflon tape around it. (that IS that water seal tape isn’t it? mine says teflon tape on the side) it’s a metal shaft sticking out but i’ve heard teflon is really really good. i have about a foot and a half long peice of pvc that i can use for the body of it…but how would i make the rollers? what good rollers can i use? i know i have alot of questions sorry…..oh and the motor is from one of those box fans, idk if that helps. i understand the whole concept of how it works, but i also know that what it’s made of is crucial to it working properly and i don’t know the materials…help?

OK. You want to build a Van De Graff. How big are you considering? If you want something that will always work for demo’s , consider something from Ramsey Electronics. Your rollers should be high resistance plastics that are good mechanically. The large commercial units use Delrin plastic and the brushes are made from something they call “gold ” brushes. The trick here is to use something that will conduct but not catch fire like steel wool. Your local driv e belt supply people will have wide belts of various lengths that will be suitable. PVC piping of various sizes will always work as the tower. Your motor will have to have a bit of torque. If you are anywhere near Boston, visit the 1 million volt unit that Van de Graff built himself. ALSO— A friend whose hobby was electronics and photography made a nice Van de Graff using a washing machine motor, Fine brush display from the top collector. Unfortunately many of his negatives suffered bright flashes that ruined them. When you exceed 30 KV, you will start generating soft X-rays. When you go much above that, you can start to get into Hard X-rays. BE CAREFUL! Keep your computer and all electronics away from it.

As the name suggests, is a coating of a special cover that is applied to the substrate, such as semiconductors, medical devices, or various metals, to improve their surface properties or increase its effectiveness. You can increase the quality of appearance, adhesion, corrosion resistance and scratch resistance – all that in addition to extending the durability of a device.

Semiconductors, used in the construction of complex and sensitive, precision instruments (as well as in general the use of electronics) also come with an appropriate overlap. This article highlights some points in the coating semiconductor and medical device coating.

What is a semiconductor?
To put it in simpler words the semiconductor is a material that has an electrical conductivity that are in the middle of a conductor and an insulator. This is a vital component of most of our days modern electronics. conductivity of semiconductors can be modified as desired by the addition of certain impurities.

Semiconductor coatings are widely used in high voltage insulators and bushings in order to increase the corona onset voltage due to its ability to relieve high electric fields. The coatings can be of Al2 O3, Si, SiO2, Si3 N4, MgF2 many substances or other, or even impurities.

Device Coating Doctors
Similar to semiconductors, medical devices, often made of stainless steel or other materials of light weight and durable, for use are bound to exercise the minimum friction, excellent adhesion and conductivity controllable especially tolerance and usability. Most of these features be provided through adequate coating of medical devices. The medical devices can vary from country cable not only a multi-form, variable in size, demanding extensive masking devices. Coatings for medical devices may be of several types such as coating Teflon core wire, wire coating hypotubes, et al.

The semiconductor layer coatings and medical devices are measured and the test opacity and thickness of the film with the help of a withdrawal card. Several mask coatings such as waxes, photo-resistors and varnishes can be applied to the surface of a grown semiconductor wafer processed or medical devices before the split bars. A layer deposition right at the semiconductor and medical device also acts as a protective mask for the device or a piece of a complicated device.
