Cruise control
History
Speed control with a centrifugal governor was used in cars and in the 1910s, particularly by Peerless. Peerless announced that its system would "maintain speed whether up or down hill." The technology was invented by James Watt and Matthew Boulton in 1788 to control steam engines. The governor adjusts the throttle position and speed of the engine changes with different loads.
Modern cruise control (also speedostat called) was invented in 1945 by the blind inventor and mechanical engineer Ralph Teetor. His idea was born from the frustration of riding in a car driven by his lawyer, who kept speeding up and slowing down as he spoke. The first car with Teetor system was the Chrysler Imperial in 1958. This system calculated ground speed based on rotational shaft and uses a solenoid to vary throttle position as required.
Theory of Operation
In design Modern cruise control may be necessary to activate before use in some designs, it is always "on" but not always active, others have a separate "on / Off ", while others have only a power switch must be pressed after the vehicle is started. Most of the designs have buttons "set", "curriculum vitae", "accelerate" and "coast" functions. Some also have a cancel button. Moreover, using the brake or clutch pedal disable the system so the driver can change the speed of the system without resistance. The system is equipped with controls within easy reach of the driver, usually with two or more buttons on the steering wheel spokes or the rim of the hub as the Honda vehicle, in the stem of the turn signal as in some General Motors vehicles or on a dedicated stalk like those found on Toyota and Mercedes-Benz vehicles. The first designs used a dial to adjust the speed choice.
The driver should bring the car up to speed manually and use a button to adjust the cruise control the current speed. The cruise control takes its speed signal from a rotating shaft, speedometer cable, speed sensor or wheel RPM motor. Most systems do not allow the use of cruise control below a certain speed (usually 35 mph/55 km / h) to discourage use in city traffic. The car will maintain that speed, pulling the throttle cable with a solenoid pump or a servo driven.
All systems must be turned off either explicitly or automatically, when the driver touches the brake or clutch. Cruise control often includes a memory feature to resume the set speed after braking and a feature Coast to restore the lower speed without braking. When cruise control is in place, the throttle can still be used to accelerate the car, but once you release auto throttle, then slow down to the speed previously set.
In recent vehicles equipped with electronic throttle control, cruise control can be easily integrated into the management system of motor vehicle. Modern "adaptive" systems (see below) include the ability to automatically reduce speed when the distance to a car in front, or the speed limit decreases. This is an advantage for driving in unknown areas.
The speed control systems of some vehicles incorporate a speed limiter "feature that will not allow the vehicle accelerate beyond a predetermined maximum, which usually can be overridden by fully depressing the accelerator pedal. (Keep in mind that most systems prevent the vehicle is accelerating beyond the speed you choose, but do not apply the brakes in case of speeding downhill.)
Advantages and disadvantages
Some of these benefits include:
Its usefulness to the units of time (which reduces driver fatigue, improving comfort allowing changes in the most secure) via Interstate highways and sparsely populated roads. This usually results in better fuel efficiency.
Some drivers use it to avoid unconsciously violating speed limits. A driver who otherwise tends to unconsciously increase speed over a road trip can avoid a speeding ticket. These Drivers should take into account, however, that cruise control can go about its configuration in a downhill which is strong enough to speed with one engine at idle.
However, the cruise control can also lead to accidents due to several factors, such as:
The lack of need to maintain constant pedal pressure, which can lead to accidents caused by drivers of highway hypnosis or incapacitated; future systems may include changing from a dead to avoid this. [Citation needed]
When used during inclement weather or while driving on wet or snow and ice covered roads, the vehicle could go into a run (although this can be somewhat mitigated by vehicles equipped with electronic stability control). Stepping on the brake to release the cruise control often results in the controller losing control of the vehicle.
Driving more "rolling" terrain, with gentle up and down portions, usually can be done so cheaper (less fuel) by an experienced driver to see on the ground, maintaining a relatively constant throttle position and allowing the vehicle to accelerate the reduction and decrease in the updates, while reducing power when cresting a rise and adding a bit before an upgrade reached. Cruise control will tend to overthrottle on improvements and delay reduction, losing storage capacity of energy available from the inertia of the vehicle. The cruise control inefficiencies may be greater on expert driving hybrid vehicles.
Many countries make it illegal to drive within the limits of the city with the cruise control feature activated. [Citation needed]
adaptive cruise control
Main article: adaptive cruise control
Some modern vehicles have adaptive cruise control (ACC) system, which is a general term meaning improved cruise control. These improvements can be automatic or dynamic braking controls set type speed.
Automatic Braking Type: The use of automatic braking of the type using a radar or laser Installation allow the vehicle to keep pace with the car still, slow when approaching the vehicle ahead and accelerate back to the preset speed when traffic permits. Some systems also have interesting collision warning system that warns the driver if a vehicle in front – given the speed of both vehicles – gets too close (within preset progress or stopping distance).
Dynamic Speed Adjustment Type: The dynamic set speed GPS position is used for speed limit signs, from a database. Some are modifiable by the driver.
