The concept of wood plastic composites (WPC) is beginning to spark interest in Europe as methods of combining the two materials are developed and the market continues to grow in U.S. and elsewhere the world. This new group of materials covers a wide range of types of polymer matrix (including PP, PE and PVC), and a wide variety of fillers and reinforcements (including wood flour, flax, jute and other cellulose based fiber fillers). The materials offer greater resistance, lower costs and a wide range of finishes, but the high content of cellulose filler of some products (up 70%) can lead to some confusion in the market – it is the wood or plastic? The plastics processing industry may change again as wood products companies are transformed into composite materials companies.
Most applications today are in the U.S., where significant advances have been made and finished products such as roofing, siding and window frames are already on the market. During the past 5 years the market of the CMP has grown at an rate of 100% per year and shows no signs of slowing as new applications are developed for materials. Most current applications are for replacement wood products outdoors, but structural engineering applications are being developed to improve the use of physical properties of WPC.
The production of WPC typically uses a fine wood waste (sawdust in the range of 40 to 60 mesh) mixed with various plastics. The powder is ejected a mass of consistency and profile is then extruded through a die one step (usually costing between: 00 and: 00) without additional calibration, and only a simple water bath for cooling.
Processing temperatures are less than 150 º C, a temperature that allows the processing rates high and low energy consumption. During production, the flow characteristics of composite lattice, through the extrusion system, allow the use of simple dies, even the most complex profiles. The simplicity of the die design means that the periods of six to eight weeks from concept to design to production are common.
